So it’s my birthday! I have now officially lived for a quarter of a century — depressing. I’ve managed to develop so many relationships with you guys via Nettuts+ and Twitter, so I thought it would be fun to tell you a handful of things about myself that you may now know. Please do the same in the comments if you wish!
- Half of the time, when editing new tutorials on Nettuts+, I have an acoustic guitar in my lap.
- I’m anti-social, and avoid phone calls at all costs. Honestly, I feel this strange wave of anxiety every time my phone rings. You can’t understand this unless you feel the same way.
- When I’m not working, I enjoy playing my electric guitar really loud - Allie hates it. I’ve done it since I was in the single digits. There’s nothing quite like playing through the Rhythmeen album.
- Speaking of which, I think that album, from ZZ Top (released around 1996) is one of the best examples of trio work ever released. Billy Gibbons’ tone and style is incredible.
- Even into college, my plan was to become a studio musician. I sometimes wonder if I missed my calling. Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to make money — rather than hope for it. As a guitar player, if you can make a decent living doing it…you can call yourself a huge success. Instead, I chose web development, and make a very healthy living. Who knows…I still try to get in at least an hour a day of playing. It used to be 3-5 per day in school, but I don’t have time any more. :(
- I never finished my degree. I resent the whole idea of college, if I’m honest. — But want to note that it’s different for every person. To the teenagers, college wasn’t right for me….but that’s not necessarily true for you.
- I refer back to my own tutorials and screencasts all of the time.
- Currently playing through Mass Effect 2…it very well might be the greatest game I’ve ever played. Though - nothing will ever, ever top “Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.”
- I love this Belgian Kriek beer that I discovered years ago when my brother and I went to Belgium. In America, I can only find it in World Market…and it’s $6.99 for a 12 ounce bottle. Way too much!
- I’m now 25, and will be a married man before the end of the year.
- I’m currently reading jQuery Cookbook, and an older book called “Pro JavaScript Techniques.” The nice thing about JavaScript is that, even though the latter was released back in 2007 (I think), it’s still perfectly relevant.
- I have the perfect job.
- I love the idea of being a photographer, even though I have absolutely no experience doing so. Not as into the business side as I am the documentation aspect.
- I am going to write + record something this year, and release it for sale myself. I just need to figure out what.
- When I was a teenager, I played chess competitively quite a bit. It’s still my favorite board game of all time.
